Bowstring Wax and String Care Products

Even the best bowstring only performs as well as you maintain it. The right bowstring wax protects the fibres from moisture, keeps the string supple, and significantly extends its service life. For everything you need to know about bowstrings in general, head to our overview. Here the focus is entirely on care and maintenance.

Why Bowstring Wax Matters

A bowstring is made up of many tightly packed strands. Over time, small gaps and irregularities form between these strands where moisture can work its way in. Bowstring wax fills those gaps, shields the fibres from water, and allows the individual strands to lie smoothly against each other with minimal friction. A well-waxed string is not only more durable, it also produces more consistent shots. In wet conditions especially, an untreated string can absorb a considerable amount of water, increasing its weight and throwing off both arrow flight and sight settings.

For modern high-performance strings made from Fast Flight or Dyneema, wax should be applied sparingly. These materials absorb very little moisture on their own, and excess wax would only add unnecessary weight to the string. Dacron strings on wooden bows are the exception: thorough and frequent waxing is strongly recommended for this material.

How to Wax Your Bowstring Correctly

Apply the wax to all sides of the strung bowstring, covering only the free strands of the string. The centre serving and the end servings are always left unwaxed. Once applied, rub the wax firmly into the string using a solid cloth. The heat generated by the friction is intentional, as it helps the wax penetrate deep into the fibres and spread evenly. With Dyneema strings, take care not to rub too vigorously, since this material begins to soften at elevated temperatures.

When should you wax? Regularly, and ideally before the string looks visibly dry or pale. Keeping an eye on the string and treating it at the first signs of dryness is the best approach. Any excess wax can be removed easily by looping a piece of thread around the string and drawing it downward from top to bottom.
